Today's tip is thanks to my friends at UCLA. I was going over a design question in the class when someone stopped me and asked "How did you do that?". So I thought if these students weren't aware of the functionality, maybe others would like to know as well. There are two parts to this changing the part. This is used to visually get it "about the right size" without knowing the exact dimension. I have to admit that I use it alot because my designs are for demonstration only.
The first is when you are creating an extrusion, revolve, or loft. With the dialog box open you can stretch the object with the mouse and have the dimension automatically fill in based on the mouse location. The key is to grab the edge of the highlight with your LMB and holding the button down, drag the highlight. It should look something like this:
The other way to manipulate the feature is by using 3D Grips. Rather than giving you the step by step on this one, I will refer you to an article that already covers that... http://manufacturing.cadalyst.com/manufacturing/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=175136. I hope this was helpful and don't worry, I am working on the Formula SAE report. I just need some time to sort thru the hundreds of pictures.
