Well, in part 2 we are going to dive into the install of the "project folder" that we call the vault. In part one I described the way this works so if you missed it, make sure that you go back and read it. If you don't have the ADMS (Autodesk Data Management Server) on your machine and need to install, I will walk you thru the steps to do that. If you already have the ADMS installed then go to step 2 below.
1. You want to use the DVD or install download that you used to install Inventor. When the installer comes up follow the prompts until it lists the available softwares. You will want to try to keep the ADMS on a computer that does not get turned off. So once the menu comes up, uncheck all boxes except ADMS. This will give you the safe place for your files. You can also choose to have the Vault Explorer on the machine as well. Remember that the vault explorer is your secure viewing of the files and has nothing to do with where they are stored.
I recommend to use the defaults as you install the software. The only other thing that you need to be aware of is the "Autodesk Web Server" vs. the "Microsoft Internet Information Services". You will need your Microsoft OS disk to get the IIS on the machine before installing the ADMS. You will want to load this if you want to work as a team.
*This snapshot is from the document highlighted below.
If you need more information I highly recommend the documentation that comes with the software. You will find that at the bottom left of the installer under "Documentation". Here is a snapshot of what you are looking for...
2. Now you are done with the ADMS install, it is time to install the VE (Vault Explorer). Once again you will start with the DVD or installer that was downloaded. You will need to hit the appropriate buttons until you get to the list of available softwares to load. You only need to install the "Autodesk Vault 2008" on every machine that a team member will use.
It is that easy! Follow the defaults and next time we will cover connecting with each team member. There are some great out of the box tools that I think you are going to love. So until next time....
